Different IT Choices when joining the Navy?

What other IT field directions does the Navy offer?

ITs are needed everywhere. If you work hard enough you can take your career nearly anywhere. From subs, ships, tactical ITs, spec. war, aircrew, and so on. As well as some other locations best not talked about. IT is one of the more versatile rates.

Currently in IT A School. There are 3 fields that ITs can work in

Tech control - working with radios
Message Center - sending/receiving messages
Automated Data Processing - maintenance/trouble shooting servers, networks, and computers

I'm am leaning more on teh automated data processing, as i have dealt and experience working with a computer network and servers... What can i expect or process? how long is it?

A school is 24 weeks, at least according to the pdf I got from it.
then there is C school right after, if you choose the 6 year program.
elsewise, you go for 4 years, and after A school you then go to your commander. Then eventually you go to C school.

Its pretty much up to the Navy what you work in, ITs are very versatile with what they can do. I think we'd all like to work with computers though lol

Which would you recommend 4yr or 6yr? I am still struggling whether i'm willing to to choose the 6th yr? Let's say i decided to choose the 4yr route... along the way will they allow me to switch to 6 or i'm stuck with what i signed for?

I'm just curious what kind of station you end up going after just A School and not C School (or stay longer taking classes)

I believe you are stuck with the contract, at least for years once you since at the last time at meps.
It's hard to say for a recommendation, I chose 6 years, because I knew that 6 years were an requirement for CTN, CTN is what I really want to do. So, the closest that was open was IT. I will either cross train into IT, or get my Dar approved, as soon as I ask my recruiter to submit it monday. I am unknown to what the limits of a System admin can and cannot do though. And apparently because there is 3 fields of IT, it depends on how well you do in A school and possibly what is open for the IT(which means I might not be doing System admin), that determines which sector of IT you go. At least it's how I see it. I could be wrong.

Oh cool thanks. I am going to take my MEPS sometime at the end of the month and hope to go to the IT rate. CTN i've heard is a little harder or is there a difference? I'm interested in networking and i know IT had it and also CTN so not sure how much difference you learn? Also i hard for CTN's you get stationed in US compared to IT which could be anywhere? is that true?
