I've been in DEP and juggled jobs long enough to know to not trust anyone with your paperwork. If that DAR is your baby and you don't see it all the way through, it might not make it. Seriously. I'm not even in boot camp yet and I've already learned that if something is important to you you gotta hold the persons hand that is responsible for it.

I will add one that my son suggested..if you EVER have a medical issue..YOU PERSONALLY make your own copy of the paperwork! Medical paperwork tends to disappear all the time! When you finally get out of the navy and need those..they will no longer be there in your packet unless YOU made copies and kept them! Here is one example from my son: he fell onboard ship while on deployment..injured his shoulder. Since they were at sea, they couldnt do an MRI, but x-rays showed a problem...they said he would have to wait til they got back from deployment to have any further tests or any treatment..well..they get back from deployment, NO RECORD OF IT EVER HAPPENING! Thank god we had pictures, however the navy hospital said it was too late to do anything...so to this day, my son has a crooked shoulder and nothing can be done about it...the VA hospital did do all the tests, but my son is not confident in the medical care from the VA, so is going to have it taken care of privately from his health care plan.

Here's a new one: Yesterday I went to PT at 0700, reported to the ship at 0900. I went to help work on a space, where I was greeted with the question, "Are you excited about going to the USS Othership?" (ship name altered per paranoia). That was the first I'd heard of it. I tracked down my LPO and learned that yes, it was put out at morning muster that several personnel, I among them, are being sent TAD for a few weeks. When do we leave? Thursday.
They let me and the others go home early today so we can pack and all, but seriously, nobody had more than 48 hours' notice (which I was told is relatively luxurious). Stay on your toes, because they LOVE to make you dance. |

I am actually pretty excited. It'll be my first underway, and I can finally start learning what I signed up for. :D

That's exactly what my attitude would be as well. Meet more people that might be very valuable later, and get to claim another vessel under your belt.
