It's a thing, but it's a complicated thing.
Basically buddy system (through bootcamp) is shipping together and being in the same division. That means you need to ship on the same day. Since you already have a shipdate, your buddy would have to find a slot that ships on the same day, and I wouldn't count on him being able to do that. Also it doesn't guarantee that neither of you will get ASMOed after you get to bootcamp. . . The only way to extend buddy system through first duty station is if you're both the same kind of PACT, and I wouldn't recommend giving up whatever contract you have to go PACT. |

If you have the same rate, you can get the buddy program through a school assuming neither of you are asmo'ed.
