Son will be heading to "A" school at Goose Creek in a couple of weeks after graduation from RTC. Will he have room in the barracks for a laptop? If so is there any form of internet connection available? His cell phone will work as a mobile hotspot as a last resort if permitted. Are cable TV connections present in the rooms? What are the room space limitations as far as personal luxuries and what type of personal items (TV, xbox, laptop, Guitar, etc) are typical for sailors stationed there for A school and Nuclear school?

I imagine my barracks life in the Army is different than the Navy and ship berthing, so I cannot relate very well to personal space allotments for barracks and sea tours that he will go through.

Thanks.

Hah! I doubt they think of that sort of tech as "luxuries". Space is limited, but practically all have one or more of a laptop, tablet, gaming system, and TV. If they don't bring it, they'll buy it, often the first weekend they are there. They will split the cost of the internet/WiFi from Comcast.

Just make sure if he is getting a tv that he realizes that not all the BEQ are the same. So one might fight in his BEQ that he first gets, but when he gets moved to a different one it still has to fit in the armoire. And the armoires are differnt sizes and have differnt shelf layouts. So I would recommend not getting the biggest tv he can find.

He will have a roommate and space is very limited,,,cell phones will work, but being the building is cinder block, my son found it worked best either outside or hanging at the window! Everything your son brings or gets must be able to be stowed away out of sight when not in the room. As for WiFi, best to get with the roommate to share costs...getting a TV is kind of pointless, as when he gets to a ship after training he wont be able to use it on a ship...the lap top is the best way, and most guys I know use Netflix or rent movies or videos. Hope this helps. Once he makes E5 and at his command and can get BAH living off base is the best time to get a TV.
