View Full Version : Question about age waiver for nuke

I just turned 28 in August. I hope to enlist soon.

I am considering nuke, would I have a realistic chance of getting an age waiver? My ASVAB score was good, although I would have to take the NAPT. I am also in the process of getting a waiver for my shoulder.

Just dont want to waste my recruiters time if its not in the cards.

Thanks all!

Have you talked to a recruiter yet about your wishes? The nuclear field does have an age requirement, this is the rules for it:

Qualifications. NF candidates must be U.S. citizens. Candidates must also not have reached their 25th birthday by the time they enter active duty (ship out to basic training). However, age-waivers will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must be a high school diploma graduate (not GED) with successful completion of one year of Algebra, and able to meet Secret security clearance (http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/security.htm) requirements.

So you might ASK if it is possible, but my guess would be not likely.

When I started the enlistment process I was 27 (28 now) and scored a 98 on the AFQT. I spoke to my recruiter about going nuke and asked about the possibility of an age waiver. He spoke to the chief and was told it was a no go as age waivers are very hard to get approved, even for nuke. I would suggest that you try to get your recruiter to submit an age waiver but know that it is very likely that it will get denied, but it's worth a shot. Have a few back up ratings ready.

Yikes, sounds like my chance of getting Nuke is next to none. I am 27 now, scored 270 on NUC line score. I have to get age waver, citizenship waver - wasn't US born, L.O.R's from employer. Good thing I locked in on AECF for May.

I am a female 28 yr old. I scored a 96 on the asvab and my line scores were high enough to not have to take the NAPT. I also have a bachelors degree in biology/enviro science. I just signed 2 weeks ago as AECF. My recruiter and the chief are pushing for me to go Nuke and it is my number one choice. Although they both said it is not likely I will get the waiver, they figured it does not hurt to put in for it. I have a good job lined up if it doesnt come back. I do hope I get it though! Good luck to all of you.

BTW when do you leave? I'm out 20130403

I don't have a scheduled ship date yet, still have to go for what I hope is my final consult tomorrow morning at MEPS. Fingers crossed I get the OK, but I'm pretty sure I will.

April, good luck! And good luck on getting the Nuke rating! Keep us posted.

It depends on your age, but in general age waivers are some of the easiest to get in the Nuke world. There are actually quite a lot of nukes with age waivers, and there's never harm in trying anyways, right? If you want it, go for it!

I have been told by most people (at MEPS and in the recruiting office) that the age waiver for nuke is one of the harder to get and that even a 26 yr is hard to get one for. Yes I am going to try...if I dont get it then it's fine b/c I am still joining the Navy :D

I think I am going to try for it anyways, just like you said, no harm in giving it a shot. I have been fascinated by it since my recruiter mentioned it during our first meeting. Doing tons of research and reading all I can, pros and cons.

I am enlisting a bit later than most people, but I have decided that I am lacking a challenge in life and I feel that Nuclear Power School would be one heck of a challenge.

I'm currently waiting for my medical waiver to come back - this past Monday I went in to see a civilian doctor for a private consult for my shoulder, he passed me with flying colors, so now I'm just waiting to hear the official word back from MEPS. Hopefully I get a response before everything shuts down for the holidays.

Dont count on getting a response back from MEPS this quick! It took about 2 weeks for my son!

Once the paperwork was actually submitted, it took about 3 weeks to be approved.

oh I understand, believe me! My recruiter has been pretty good about getting a prompt response so far, so I am being optimistic!

not counting on anything.

Ok. I haven't finished reading the other responses, but I had to say - don't worry about "wasting" your recruiter's time. They're getting paid either way to be there. Your Navy career is YOUR decision and YOUR responsibility. If you want it, you have to get it. :) I was 27 when I joined, btw. :)

Just a quick update:

I am officially a DEP'er as of 1/10/2013! I am going in as a CTM, my ship date is in May. Pretty excited.

Thanks for the information everyone!

I just entered DEP with rating AECF, but submitted an age waiver application for NF. I will update the forum with the waiver (dis)approval, but here is some pertinent information regarding my "whole person":
-27 years old (will still be 27 on shipping date);
-bachelors degree in biology (poor GPA = not applying as an Officer Candidate);
-passed AP Calculus BC with an A in high school;
-only 2 minor speeding tickets 8 years ago, no other police history; and
-99th percentile on AFQT with 275 nuc subscore.

I was very encouraged by a Master Chief counselor about my waiver. I hope to share good news for future old men like myself.

There are a lot of very old nukes (well, old for just joining the navy now as enlisted, myself included). I want to say the oldest in my NFAS class was 29 just starting A School, you'll be right at home.

A 29 year old? That's excellent news to hear; first I've heard of someone so old in nuke school.

An update to my posts above:

I was disapproved for a waiver to be NF based on my age.

My waiver application was re-submitted (apparently there is a new policy or something) and approved!

I will be 27 when I go to nuclear field A-school.

I'm a 27 year old college graduate who didn't have the grades to go officer either. I am in DEP for AECF but trying to get an age waiver for Nuke. This last post is giving me hope!

I'm 24, but I'll be 25 before boot camp. My age waiver was approved in less than a week...

I entered DEP Friday with the AECF Rate, ship date 20140513.

I'm currently 24 (25 in September) and because aging out is possible before a ship date, they're requiring an age waiver. I'm hopeful it will come back very, very soon!

Good luck to others in the same age waiver boat!

mich313 as of right now, we ship the same day with the same rate. My age waiver is being put in this week. Hopefully we both get the change we're looking for.
