Just a quick question? Is it mandatory in basic to attend some kind a service every Sunday or is it optional?

It is entirely optional. Which service you go to and even if you decide to go at all or stay in the compartment is entirely up to you. The only mandatory religious thing you'll do is have a brief with the chaplain who will tell you about your religious options and what his job is and let you know you can come to him if you need help. Its not very religious. Services are a personal choice, so if you want to go you can and they won't deny you the chance and if you don't want to go, you don't have to!

Sunday is the only day you really can write letters home and to friends, as mail is only posted on Mondays. You get to do laundry and ironging!

You don't have free time. Even if you are not religious very much, it's actually kind-of fun going. Try it a couple times. It might just break up the day. It's not like your missing out going to the mall.

My son told me before he left he wasn't going to attend church service and I thought to myself 'yeah right you'll end up attending' LOL. My DIL got a letter from him on Monday and low and behold he has decided to start attending services

Sunday's is "Free time" which is Boot Camp talk for talk to people in the division quietly, take a long shower, write a few letters, shine boots, iron and clip gear adrift off your uniforms. You don't miss anything going to services, but its up to you. I never went, I wrote letters showered and shined boots.
