Default CTT or CTR?

Hello everyone! I'm a depper who is going to MEPS on Friday and taking my ASVAB this afternoon. I am interested in the CT field, specifically CTT and CTR. I'm trying to determine which I think I would enjoy more though. If I am offered both rates at MEPS on Friday, I want to be able to make an informed decision. Any CTTs or CTRs out there that want to offer up any info they can on their jobs? Pros and cons both will be appreciated. I'm also interested in the IS and IT rates, but not as much as the CTs. Thanks in advance!

Check this thread out. It's all about the CT rates.

If you have specific questions, I can answer them. Also I have an "Ask a Spook" thread on here that has folks asking a lot of the same questions you'll probably have.

A lot of CT work is pretty similar, but each branch has its own special flavor of work. Honestly though, I would do this job for free if I didn't have to worry about bills. I love it that much.

Thank you so much! I'm just trying to gain as much info before I have to pick a job on Friday. I'll definitely look into those threads! I'm new here, so I'm still figuring everything out! Thanks again to both of you!

well i know just from where i work that CTR's generally stay on the shore going NIOC to NIOC. CTT's theres not a lot of them out there. small rate but i only know one of them and hes headed to a ship. so if you wana stay on land, which no SAILOR should, CTR would be the way to go.. CTT seems intresting tho

ISSN,
That's not quite accurate.

Both CTR's and CTT's are on almost every combat ship in the fleet, as well as DIRSUP'd to Submarines as well. You will absolutely be going to sea as either rate within your first 2 duty stations (short of some freak situation).

CTT's manage the Anti-Ship Missile Defense (ASMD) and ELINT duties for ships at sea, and CTR's are down in SESS performing COMINT duties. So both rates are heavily involved with operations onboard the ship.

My friend is retired CTR Chief and spent fair amount of time on ships, from carriers to destroyers. From what I've read online the CT rate that stays mostly on shore is CTN.

That's correct.

CTN's do have some Spec War opportunities (as all CT's do), but the opportunity to go to sea is pretty limited as a N-brancher.

ISSN Reynolds,

For OPSEC's sake I would also remove your specific job title and NEC from your signature block. Last name is fine, but specifics shouldn't be mentioned as to your role and duty station.

My roommate is about to go to some destroyer and he's a CTR. I'm also a CTR (hopefully) and I enjoy it so far. But I might be a little biased. I think I would enjoy almost any job in the navy.

Thanks for all the advice! I definitely want the opportunity to travel a bit. I went to MEPS today, but wasn't able to DEP in until I get my eyes checked by some specialist. I've worn glasses most of my life, but I've never really had any issues. Not sure what the issue is now. Anyway, I'll hopefully be going back on Monday to finish things up! Can't wait to see what jobs are offered to me!

Update: I got back from MEPS this afternoon. They didn't offer me a CT position, but I took AECF and my recruiter is working with me to do everything possible to see if I can class up (or whatever he called it) to CTR or CTT if positions are open come January. As of now my ship date is 20140302. I think I will like the AECF field even if I don't have the opportunity to switch to a CT job. So there's all of that. Thank you all again for your advice and encouragement!

Stay on top of them, I signed as an AECF initially and I got my DEP Action Request (or DAR) approved!

I most definitely plan on doing so! If you don't mind me asking, which job did you switch to?

I'm trying to decide a rate but I'm having some troubles. I want to work with networks as a ctn but they only go like 7 duty stations and they are all in the united states. What rate could I pick that does the same sort of thing but travels more?

IT would be an option. You would work with networks and radios, but you can end up in a lot of different places.
