Default NEC

Hello everyone! As I have transitioned from the Air Force Reserves to the Navy Reserves of course I selected the rate of an IS. However, with so many NEC's available to choose from I'm leaning towards OPINTEL and EXPINTEL. With that being said, I am looking for something that I would be able to translate over into civilian life once I separate from the Navy. Any thoughts or ideas of which one is most transferable? What NEC's usually deploy the most? What's the best NEC to choose from?

I'm going to be honest, I'm a little confused at your statement of "so many NECs available to choose from".

Granted, I'm active, not reserves - but in my experience NECs are tied to billets. You're given orders to fill a certain billet, and that billet you're going to requires certain training, so they send you to C school on the way to your new duty station and when you've completed the school, you get the NEC to prove it. Some duty stations also have OJT paths to earning a NEC that corresponds with your day to day job for specific rates (i.e. we have a training pipeline at my command that corresponds to the CTR NEC 9148, but even if I complete it and do the same job, I can't get that NEC because it's CTR-specific and I'm a CTI).

Both of my NECs are from my training pipeline and I was required to complete that training to be able to do my job. I've never had a choice.

I apologize if what I'm saying doesn't make sense as I am still trying to learn the language as well. But when I refer to NEC in the IS community I'm referring to the specific trade for example Operational Intelligence Analyst, Expeditionary Warfare Intelligence Analyst, Imagery Analyst, etc that you would be going to C school for. With the reserves I am able to select any billet that I want. So what I'm trying to understand is that I know every NEC does something different, but to translate my military experience to the civilian world might be quite challenging depending on which one I select. I was inquiring which one could I do on the outside if I retired from the Navy in the next couple of years? Does this make sense now? I am sorry for the confusion

jzhaun is on point in saying that most NECs are related to a billet. IE, the Navy isn't just going to dish out tens of thousands of dollars to send you to a school for a skillset that you're not gonna be using. The reserves is a bit different since you can route a request up your CoC for a specific school, but at the end of the day the approval for that comes down to what your commands training budget is, timelines, qualification needs, etc.

As far as who deploys the most, I'd have to go check the current advertisements next time I'm at work. But SELRES deployments have gone down significantly from what they were a few years ago. That may change if things ramp up again though.

If you have a question about a specific NEC or duty, let me know. That would probably be easier than me listing out every single NEC that IS's have lol If I don't know the answer I'll just hit up one of the IS types that work with me.

Good afternoon CTT1 (SW) Griffin,

I am an enlisted active duty IS. So since I am active duty, I won't be choosing the NEC correct? And will the Navy be choosing that for me when I get out of A School? Also, what would be a good estimate on how long I will be out at sea at a time? I have little boy so I'm trying to make arrangements for when I do ship out. Thank you so much.
