Aviation Boatswain's Mate

Aviation Boatswain's Mates are responsible for aircraft catapults, arresting gear and barricades. They operate fuel and lube oil transfer systems, as well as direct aircraft on the flight deck and in hangar bays before launch and after recovery. They use tow tractors to position planes and operate support equipment used to start aircraft.

(ABE) Aviation Boatswain's Mate - Equipment

ABEs operate, maintain, and perform maintenance on steam catapults, barricades, arresting gear, and associated equipment ashore and afloat; operate catapult hydraulic systems, retraction engines, water brakes, jet blast deflectors, deckedge and ICCS, and jet blast deflector control panels; arresting gear engines, sheave dampers, deckedge control station, and associated equipment; perform aircraft handling duties related to the operation of aircraft launching and recovery equipment. It is known throughout the fleet that ABEs have one of the most rigorous ratings in the U.S. Navy. ABEs usually work long hours, sometimes without sleep. It is one of the toughest and most physically demanding jobs onboard a carrier.

Working Environment
Most of the work in this rating is performed outdoors on the deck of aircraft carriers, in all climatic conditions, in fast-paced and often potentially hazardous environments. ABs work closely with others in aviation ratings.

A-School (Job School) Information
Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, FL - 5 weeks training (ABE)

After "A" school, aviation boatswains's mates may be assigned to aircraft carriers, LHDs, LHAs, LPHs, LPDs or Naval Air Stations in the United States or overseas. They may also be assigned to other types of ships with airplanes or helicopters. If they re-enlist, they may go to "C" school for further training. During a 20-year period in the Navy, ABs spend about 60 percent of their time assigned to fleet units and 40 percent to shore stations.

First Sea Tour: 60 months
First Shore Tour: 36 months
Second Sea Tour: 60 months
Second Shore Tour: 36 months
Third Sea Tour: 48 months
Third Shore Tour: 36 months
Fourth Sea Tour: 48 months
Forth Shore Tour: 36 months

Note: Sea tours and shore tours for sailors that have completed four sea tours will be 36 months at sea followed by 36 months ashore until retirement.
ABE is a sea-intensive community. Manning conditions at sea may require the need to request sea tour extension or shore tour curtailments to ensure all sea duty billets are filled.

(ABF) Aviation Boatswain's Mate - Fuels

Aviation Boatswain's Mates play a major part in launching and recovering naval aircraft quickly and safely from land or ships. This includes aircraft fueling and fuel systems. Later in their careers ABs can earn the advanced AB rating that requires supervision of all these individual specialties.

The duties performed by ABFs include:

operating, maintaining and performing organizational maintenance on aviation fueling and lubricating oil systems on CVs, CVNs, LPHS and LPDS;
observing and enforcing handling safety precautions and maintaining fuel quality surveillance and control in aviation fuel systems;
supervising the operation and servicing of fuel farms and equipment associated with the fueling and defueling of aircraft ashore and afloat;
training, directing and supervising fire fighting crews, fire rescue teams, and damage control parties in assigned fuel and lubricating oil spaces.

performing crash rescue, fire fighting, crash removal and damage control duties in connection with launching and recovery of aircraft.

Working Environment
Most of the work in this rating is performed outdoors on the deck of aircraft carriers, in all climatic conditions, in fast-paced and often potentially hazardous environments. ABs work closely with others in aviation ratings.
