Brute force, and stupid tricks you'll just have to make up for yourself.

I know you want to know everything beforehand, and that's fine, as long as you understand you're not going to get it all in advance. I promise, when you get there, you'll have so much time to study the (current, up to the minute!) chain of command, you'll want to bang your head on the deck rather than do it anymore.

As for the stupid tricks: Learn names in chunks, particularly pairing commanders with their master chiefs. While I was there, the NSTC commander was RDML Mewbourne, and his MCPO was a Master Chief Walker. Originally, I misheard "Mewbourne" as "Newborn". Newborns don't Walk. Bam, paired, and I still remember it a year longer than I needed to.

The stupider the trick is, the better, because it will linger whether you like it or not.

You will learn it all when you get to bootcamp. Make up little tricks to help remember it. Keep in mind that it can change. My chain of command changed 3 times when I was in bootcamp.

I don't remember it being on any of the tests. Don't focus on it so much. I know telling you again won't change anything, but you will stare at this info so often that it'll sink in whether you like it or not. When you come out the other end you'll realize how true that is.

(Aside: It's "chain of command". Not a plural.)

Probably. Do NOT memorize them. Unless you're shipping this week, I can almost guarantee you that some will change before you get there.

Once again, you will spend plenty of time AT BOOT CAMP studying this, and when you are actually there, you will get the CURRENT chain of command. If it changes while you're there, you will get the news immediately.

It's probably the one listed. Last year it was CAPT Dye.

While I was attached to RTC Great Lakes we were never asked there first name or their rates... the only time we were ever asked the chain of command was during personal inspection it never appeared on test 1 test 2 test 3.

The problem with this post is that someone will find it next year, won't read the date carefully enough, and will think it's hot off the press. They'll go to boot with the wrong information and have to un-learn it before they learn the current names.

I'll say it once more: Boot camp is easy. The chain of command is easy even by boot camp standards. If you can't learn it while you're there, you're either concealing a learning disability or you're just not trying.

The first test will only consist of information from your start guide. You don't need to know anything but the start guide when you show up, but please know the entire start guide!

You'll be reading that trainee guide every time before chow and whenever you have free time... you'll memorize it. For whoever posted that last Chain of Command, it was almost near accurate. I graduated a few weeks ago.
