Machinist Mate (Nuclear Field) MMN

General Info: Nuclear-trained MMs, EMs and ETs perform duties in nuclear propulsion plants operating reactor control, propulsion and power generation systems. The character of NF jobs is mentally stimulating and offers career growth. The NF provides opportunities to work closely with specialists in the nuclear, technology, and engineering fields.

What They Do: The Navy is the leader in the development and safe operation of nuclear power plants and provides the most comprehensive technical education available in the NF. New and exciting career opportunities await the select group of people who possess nuclear knowledge and know-how, gained through Navy training.

ASVAB Score Requirements: VE+AR+MK+MC+NAPT>=290 AND NAPT>=50 or AR+MK+EI+GS+NAPT>OR=290 and AND NAPT>OR=50 or AR+MK+EI+GS>=252 or VE+AR+MK+MC>OR=252

Other Requirements: Must have normal color perception. Must have normal hearing. Security Clearance (SECRET) Requirement. 72 month obligation. Must be U.S. citizen.

Notes: All candidates for ratings in the nuclear field (NF) program must meet test score criteria (no waivers) and other criteria set forth in NAVMILPERSCOMINST 1306.11 (series). All candidates must be high school graduate (GED not acceptable), and have completed at least one year of algebra with a minimum grade of "C". Transcripts (or certified copy) must be filed in service record when enlisted. Minimum auditory requirements: Frequency (HZ) / ISO 500/30 1000/30 2000/30 3000/45 4000/60 5000-8000/None

High school diploma graduate or equivalent. Must be able to type 40 words per minute. Must have no record of conviction by civil court for any offense other than minor traffic.

Technical Training Information: Enlistees are taught the fundamentals of this rating through on-the-job training or formal Navy schooling. Advanced technical and operational training is available in this rating during later stages of career development.

Introduction to technical documentation, basic mechanical theory, safety precautions and programs, alignment and operation of piping systems and equipment, hand tools, precision instruments, lubricants, bearings, couplings, gears, valves, pumps and the Maintenance Material Management System (3M) Group instruction and practical application

Introduction to technical documentation, basic watch standing procedures, alignment and operation of piping systems and equipment, hand tools, precision instruments, lubricants and lubricating systems, bearings, couplings, gears, valves, the Maintenance Material Management System (3M), basic technical knowledge, terminology and watch standing procedures for the operation of conventional marine steam propulsion systems and preventive maintenance of plant equipment

During a 20-year period in the Navy, MMs spend about 70 percent of their time assigned to fleet units and 30 percent to shore stations. Shore assignments are normally at shore intermediate activities (SIMAs) as instructors in Class "A" or "C" Schools, as recruit company commanders or in recruiting duty.

Working Environment: Machinist's mates work within the hull of a ship in fire rooms, boiler rooms, engine rooms or shops. These locations are sometimes hot and noisy. MMs may be required to perform some heavy physical work. They must be able to work closely with others and, in some cases, with limited supervision

One thing I forgot to ever post here was how long the ACTUAL time to be expected at training..

Yes, A school is only 3 months long. But when you arrive at Goose Creek, most times you will have to wait to class up. They only have the MM's in this A school class and it needs to be full before they start, so if you arrive just after a class has alredy started, you will be waiting!

Then you move on to Power school, this class is 6 months long. But before you can take it, you must first pass the Petty Officer class, it is easy but about a week long. THEN once again you must wait to class up, as in this class you will be intergrated with the EM's and ET's. Sometimes this wait time can be way more than a month, but hey, you will have time to go off base and see the sites of South Carolina!

Then you move on to Prototype school, you will have a choice of which one to go to, stay in Goose Creek or go north to the other one. The wait time for this can be a very long one. Most times due to the fact they can only have so many in the class at a time, and many times they are taking the reactors down for refueling on one or the other making it only one school available.

So plan on being there about 2 years or more if you choose this rate! One other thing, you really dont know your actual rate until you get mostly through bootcamp...you MAY be given a choice of which one you want, but the needs of the navy come first and if they need more EM's and ET's..that is what you will be getting! Sorry if your recruiter never told you this part!!! But who knows, you may be lucky and get the one you wanted and not much wait time...

Yes..why..you know him? If so, he is home now and has a GREAT job! He is working at the local power plant making more than he did in the Navy, and in less than a month was promoted up to the next level!

When I lived out in San Diego, I hung out with him a couple of times. I actually hung out with a few of the NUKE's on the Nimitz. Tubig, Blank, and Solon(who was my old roommate.)
