Question Life after Nuke School

When you are on base and say you go surface, Ive heard that you live on the ship. Does that mean that you cannot have a house in say Norfolk if that's where you are stationed? Ive seen that you have to be at least an E-5 to receive BAH to live in the town. Any clarification or explanation would be greatly appreciated on this.

You'll probably have a barracks room that you're responsible for. But you're not *required* to stay there.
That being said, a one bedroom apartment in Norfolk is about $800+ per month - budget wisely.

I know it was a while back, but when my son went to fleet from nuke school, he had to live on ship. He wasnt happy as in Prototype you get BAH do to housing shortage. But being in fleet he had to live on ship until E5..however, one other nuke and him got an apartment in Rancho Cordova after getting permission to live off base. It was only about 15 minutes from the base in San Diego. The apartments there are more affordable!

How long did he have to live on the ship before he made E-5 and was granted permission to live off base?

My son was on the ship..well actually a barge docked next to the Nimitz..he got permission to pay out of pocket in about 5 months to live off the ship. His ship was deployed when he made E5 so it was a given to move into an apartment on his own when he got back 9 months later. His ship was deployed within 7 months of him getting there...so he wasnt in San Diego all that long before making E5(he made it on his first try testing)....they were sitting in the gulf of Oman.
