Engineering Aide (EA)

Engineering Aides provide construction engineers with information needed to develop final construction plans. They conduct surveys for roads, airfields, buildings, etc. They perform soil tests, prepare topographic and hydrographic maps. They also survey for sewars, water lines, drainage systems and underwater excavations.

Engineering Aide (EA's) assist construction engineers in developing final construction plans. They conduct land surveys; prepare maps, sketches, drawings and blueprints; estimate costs; perform quality assurance tests on common construction materials such as soils, concrete and asphalt; and perform other engineering technician functions.

The duties performed by EAs include:

* conducting location surveys for roads, airfields, pipelines, ditches, buildings, drainage structures and waterfront construction;
* preparing hydrographic, topographic and triangulation drawings and maps;
* computing the volume of bulk materials (concrete, bituminous mixtures and earthwork) from drawings and specifications;
* laying out all types of construction work;
* operating and maintaining various types of precision surveying and laboratory test instruments and equipment;
* preparing architectural, mechanical, electrical, and civil drawings and sketches;
* designing grading and drainage systems;
* conducting concrete, soil and asphalt tests;
* conducting quality control inspections for all types of construction projects;
* prepare network analyses, charts and graphs;
* reading and interpreting blueprints and preparing sketches for projects;
* making estimates of material, labor, and equipment requirements.

Working Environment

EAs may work in a variety of conditions, independently or as members of a large team. Their many different duties may be performed in climates ranging from tropical to arctic.

Fort Leonard Wood, MO -- 107 calendar days
Security Clearance Requirement: None

Other Requirements

* 60 month enlistment obligation
* Must have at least 1/2 Yearr of high school Trig, or 1 Qtr of College Trig, with a minimum grade of "C."


Sea/Shore Rotation for This Rating

* First Sea Tour: 36 months
* First Shore Tour:48 months
* Second Sea Tour: 36 months
* Second Shore Tour: 43 months
* Third Sea Tour: 36 months
* Third Shore Tour: 48 months
* Fourth Sea Tour: 36 months
* Forth Shore Tour: 48 months

Note: Sea tours and shore tours for sailors that have completed four sea tours will be 36 months at sea followed by 36 months ashore until retirement.

** Note: BU,EA, and SW combine at paygrade E-9 to the rating of Master Chief Constructionman (CUCM)
