(CS) Culinary Specialist

Culinary Specialists prepare menus and order the quantities and types of food items. They operate galley and dining facilities, manage large facilities, keep records for food supplies and financial budgets, and can even serve as flight attendant aircrewmen. They can also serve as personal food service specialist, household/estate manager or chef for an admiral, the First Family, President of the United States at Camp David and the White House, to the Vice President at Number One Observatory Circle or for a commanding officer aboard ship or at shore bases. Ashore, Culinary Specialists often manage and maintain clubs, TAD hotels and Permananent Party naval barracks.


Culinary Specialists (CS's) receive extensive training in cooking, baking, dining and living area management. Navy Culinary Specialists provide food service for admirals and senior government executives and run the White House Mess for the President of the United States. They are responsible for all aspects of the dining (mess decks) and living areas, Culinary Specialists work in the "heart of the ship," and are vital in maintaining high crew morale on the ship and every shore base.

Duties include:
Preparing menus and ordering the quantities and types of food items;
Operating kitchen and dining facilities; Keeping records for food supplies and financial budgets; Serving as personal food service specialists on admirals' staffs and for the commanding officer aboard ship or at shore bases; Operating and managing living quarters aboard ships and at shore based motel/hotel type quarters.

Working Environment
Culinary Specialists work in kitchens, dining areas, living quarters and storerooms where food supplies are kept. The work is primarily physical and involves working as part of a team.

A-School (Job School) Information
Great Lakes, IL -- 4 weeks

Security Clearance Requirement: None

Sea/Shore Rotation for This Rating
First Sea Tour: 48 months
First Shore Tour: 36 months
Second Sea Tour: 48 months
Second Shore Tour: 36 months
Third Sea Tour: 36 months
Third Shore Tour: 36 months
Fourth Sea Tour: 36 months
Forth Shore Tour: 36 months
Note: Sea tours and shore tours for sailors that have completed four sea tours will be 36 months at sea followed by 36 months ashore until retirement.

Our daughter has signed up for the CS rating...just thought I'd let you know that the CS 'A' school has been moved to Fort Lee in Virginia...we had thought (because of what her recruiter said) that she would be at GL...and since we have family in the area we're like But 2 days before she went in I was tooling around Navy4Moms and found out about Fort Lee. Kinda like Such is life right?

THANK YOU for this site and all the work that goes into it. It has made our lives (and emotions) way less crazy. g

Hi Gret,
I'm already a cook and was wondering of I'll be able to get this job,. My recruiter hasn't been much help. Would you know if this position is over manned? I looked at the January 2013 Creo listing on Navy.mil and Noticed that it was... Just kind of looking for updated numbers. Thanks.
