Nuke... how hard is it to get it?

Hey everyone, I'll be getting my Bio BS degree in june and was thinking of enlisting as a nuke(I was particularly interesting in becoming an ET ).

I am aware that the age limit is 25 and i'll turn 24 in june so i know i'm really pushing it.. so is there a chance that I wont be qualified for any nuke jobs because of my age?

I dont want to go through ODS because I want to avoid the competition since i'm already at a risk with my age and all... If I apply and get rejected for ODS, I'll probably go over 25 so I want to take the safer side of enlisting.

also, how hard is it to get assigned ET? If I score really well on ASVAB, will they let me choose one of the nuclear field jobs or will they just throw me one that they need the most out of them?

From what I know, in boot camp you fill out a preference sheet for which of the three nuke ratings (ET, EM, MM) you want, but it's ultimately determined by the needs of the Navy.

Nukes go to OCS not ODS.
You can apply for OCS while processing for enlisting, it doesn't have to be one or the other until you actually ship.

And you can start your enlistment process now, you don't have to wait until you graduate.

I believe the 25 y/o age limit for Nuke is only for enlistment. I don't believe that same age limit applies on the OCS side, but I'm not 100% on that. I would definitely confirm though.

For enlisting though, I was accepted as a Nuke (age 24- turn 25 in sept was shipping in oct) and was able to get an age waiver without much trouble.

Do well enough on the ASVAB that you don't have to take the Nuke exam!

I cannot speak of the odds of an age waiver, but mine was approved and I will be 28 at RTC. I created a handwritten statement detailing my interest in NF, and I understand there is a whole-person concept underlying waiver approval.

...I also have a BS in biology, and it did not work out for me as expected, so I can empathize with your want.

I have a similarish question- does anybody have experience with becoming a reactor engineer? Realistically, my chances should at least be reasonable, but I'd like to hear from others who have at least tried.

I graduated from college in physics and math, so I shouldn't be too shabby. But, you know, I'm still a bit nervous.

I might ask how old you are..nukes have an age limit to enlist.
