You really don't want take more than the list that's in your START guide. Mostly everything is going to be issued to you, so you'd only Wallet (with I.D., social security, and such), small address book, phone (for your first call upon arrival). Direct Deposit slip (If you don't want to sign up for Navy Federal when you get there). That's pretty much it, I believe. I mean, you can bring a book or something for entertainment for the travel there, but I'd personally try to keep it to a minimum since the shipping to send your things back home is going to come out of your check.

You will be given time to visit the base's shop to pick up notebooks and writing utensils to write home. Everything you keep will be kept in a drawer on your bed. It's about 20 inches long, 14 inches wide, and about 3-4 inches tall. Those are just estimates. You will be keeping all your personal items in there, including hygiene items issued to you and various other things. If you're bringing any religious text, try and find a smaller copy.
