Getting my Drivers License

Im in the AECF program. So I currently only have a drivers permit. I dont have time to get it before I leave because new york has some very crazy conditions in order to get your license. I have alot of family and friends in Illinois and actually in the chicago area. So my question is, After RTC during my first tech school will I Have weekends available to maybe have a friend or family member pick me up and take me to the DMV to get my license? And if so and I do get some time off on the weekends will I be able to rent a car?

I would think you could get your lic. on your time off, but most DMV's are not open on weekends, so that will be a problem. Not sure how old you are, but you generally need to be at least 21 with insurance to rent a car.

Im 19 but I heard that with a license, and being in the military they will rent you a car.

Some companies will rent to people even at 18. However, they pay a huge amount for the car. Typically someone over 25 will pay around 30-40 bucks a day for a car. An 18 year will be paying 65-100 per day depending on the car. Once you hit 21 it goes down in price, but still won't go down to what normal people pay until 25. 11 months to go for me...ugh.

I have visited a few Car Rental Websites, the ones near Great Lakes advertise a discount with a Military ID

Good to know. I want to drive up to Wisconsin and Ice Fish. Since I will be there over a year it seems, I should definitely be able to have the chance.

I came across this on the Great Lakes Navel Webpage

"By Train

The Metra Union Pacific North Line, (Off-site link) which is part of the Regional Transportation Authority (METRA), offers commuter service to and from downtown Chicago and to and from Kenosha, Wisconsin. A one-way fare from the Great Lakes station to the Chicago terminal for military personnel in uniform costs approximately half the normal fare."

It may be a little cheaper this way. Depending on where in wisconsin your going, you can just rent a car when you get there. Return it, and take the train back.

Oh and Hey we are both AECF! When do you ship??

I'm not sure where I am going in Wisconsin yet. I will have to look into that once it becomes Winter again out there. This train idea, it might be a really good idea....I ship 20120606

The train is really good and runs often, my advise would be DONT TAKE A TAXI! They charge you up the butt!
