GM Eligibility
Alright, so I went to MEPS and signed a SN PACT contract, as it was basically the only thing open that could potentially lead to crossing into the GM rating eventually..
The career counselor at MEPS for the most part said I was not eligible for anything other then CS and SN PACT. I'm a smart lad, and I picked up on the small nuances of him lying (or atleast exaggerating) with a smile on his face to (in my mind) persuade me to pick a undermanned job such as SN PACT. Now I signed the contract based on what I wanted out of the Navy not what he was trying to sell me on. My question is, I have a moral waiver for a Drug Paraphernalia ticket I received 3 years ago, does anyone here know for certain if that instantly disqualifies me from getting that rating while in the DEP? I want to put in a DAR for this rating, but I don't want to agitate my recruiter if in the end I find out I'm already DQ'd from this rating while in DEP. Thanks again, this forum is great! |
So the questions you should be asking are:
Do I have the line scores necessary for the job? (AR+MK+ EI+GS= 205) Can I get the clearance required for the job? (GM needs a Secret) Do I meet any other special requirements? (GM requires U.S. citizen, normal color perception and normal hearing) But I doubt the career counselor was lying to you. They don't really care what job you pick, if you don't take it someone else will. If he said CS and PACT are all that you qualified for, he probably meant it (at least out of the jobs he had available). Your recruiter should be able to tell you whether or not you qualify for GM. |
I'm pretty sure the drug paraphernalia ticket DQs you from any job with a security clearance, but don't quote me on it.

I believe that the SN PACT rating requires a 'Secret' clearance which is my current rating. My line scores are well above what is required, and have normal color perception and normal hearing.
I will ask my recruiter if given the chance at my DEP meeting tomorrow. I know that I am DQ'ed from the MA rating given my moral waiver but I haven't found any information online as to if my ticket would DQ me from GM. I will ask my recruiter as soon as I can and relay it back here to help anyone who may be in my shoes as well. |
By offering those rates, he is telling you that you will not qualify for a clearance. The only undesignated community that requires at least a secret are firemen. On a carrier that's because all engineers own equipment in reactor spaces.

Another question, once I get in and pass RTC and do my time as Undes SN, will I be able to apply for a secret clearance? Shooting for striking to GM after I do my time if possible, which I believe requires a 'Secret' security clearance. |
I would like to apologize for asking these very specific questions in multiple different threads, these answers I just can't find while perusing the net.

If you aren't working with classified material (most GM's don't) then you probably won't be processed for one as a Sailor moving from PACT to GM. There really wouldn't be any need for the Navy to spend the money on it (they're expensive). If you got into GM and transferred to a duty station where you needed a SECRET level clearance, then you would be processed at that time for one. /r CTT1 |
