I've read on the MA forum about the process and just how difficult it is to become a MWD handler. I was just curious if anyone has recently been approved or anyone on this site that has been approved to do this job could give me some recent tips, insight and so on on the program and what I can do to better what little chances to get picked up to go to a C-School and be a dog handler. Any help would be great. Thanks! :)

My understanding from my MA buddies is that it's less common to get sent for that school right from A-school, and more common that people qualify at their command and then get sent.

Your best bet in that situation would be to get to your command and GET QUALIFIED to do your normal, day-to-day job. Once you're on good footing there, start talking to the guys over in the Kennel and volunteer some time learning about it. See what they'll let you get qualified in and after a while you can make a pretty strong case to your chain of command to get you that school.

The key thing here, like most things in the Navy, is QUALIFICATIONS. If it's not on paper and in your record then it doesn't mean shit. If you've got those PQS's signed though, a lot more doors will open for you.

I've heard that as well but that's great anyways! Definitely don't mind putting in extra work to get that. Thanks so much! :)

Very few people get K9 out of "A" school, but it does happen. If there are openings they'll interview you. Don't get bummed if you aren't picked up right away.

If your first command has a kennel the way to get K9 is to get 100% qualed up on your regular job and do kennel support on your off time. Complete the quals on that side and you may be recommended for K9 "C" school.

K9 is a subjective, tricky thing to get. Right place, right time, right people.

Im at MA A School right now, and from what i have seen, there are usually a couple spots for Military Working Dog in each class, but to even be considered for an interview, you need to score an excellent or higher on your initial PRT when you arrive here. Not many students do that, so i you can, the chances of getting chosen for MWD are pretty high, as long as you don't express any interest in PRP beforehand, as volunteering to be screened for PRP automatially disqualifies you from MWD.
