(YN) Yeoman

Yeomen perform secretarial and clerical work. They deal with visitors, telephone calls and incoming mail. They organize files and operate copy and order and distribute supplies. They write and type business and social letters, notices, directives, forms and reports.


Yeoman (YN's) perform administrative and clerical work. They receive visitors, answer telephone calls and sort incoming mail. They type, organize files and operate modern office equipment such as word processing computers and copying machines.


The duties performed by YNs include:

preparing, typing and routing correspondence and reports;
organizing and maintaining files;
receiving office visits and handling telephone communications;
operating personal computers, word processing, duplicating, audio-recording and other office machines;
performing office personnel administration;
maintaining records and official publications;
performing administrative functions for legal proceedings;
serving as office managers;
performing other various clerical and administrative duties.
Working Environment
Yeomen are usually assigned duties in an office environment. People in this rating may work alone with little supervision, or work closely with others under close supervision depending on the assignment.

A-School (Job School) Information
NTTC Meridian , MS -- (self-paced course. Averages 46 calendar days)

Security Clearance Requirement: Secret


Other Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen
Must be able to type 40 words per minute upon graduation from A-School
Sea/Shore Rotation for This Rating

First Sea Tour: 36 months
First Shore Tour: 60 months
Second Sea Tour: 36 months
Second Shore Tour: 48 months
Third Sea Tour: 36 months
Third Shore Tour: 48 months
Fourth Sea Tour: 36 months
Forth Shore Tour: 48 months
Note: Sea tours and shore tours for sailors that have completed four sea tours will be 36 months at sea followed by 36 months ashore until retirement.




Yeoman, Submarines (YNSS) receive extensive training in administrative support to officers and enlisted personnel. They are responsible for information related to Navy occupations, general education, requirements for promotion, and rights and benefits, Yeoman (Submarines) keep the ship's daily schedule running by receiving visitors, answering the telephone, sorting mail, organizing files and operating modern office equipment. Yeoman also order and distribute supplies.


Typical duties include:

Working Environment
Submarine Yeomen are assigned to either a Fast Attack or Ballistic Missile submarine for their initial sea tour. They are usually assigned duties in an office environment. People in this rating may work alone with little supervision, or work closely with others under close supervision depending on the assignment. They do mostly administrative work.


A-School (Job School) Information

Groton, CT -- 4 weeks (Basic Enlisted Submarine School)
NTTC Meridian, MS --(Self-paced course, averages 46 calendar days (YN A School))
Security Clearence Requirement: Secret


Other Requirements

Must be U.S. Citizen
Most have normal color perception (can be waived)
Must have normal hearing.
Must volunteer for submarine duty
Must have no record of conviction by civil court for any offense other than minor traffic.
Moral turpitude offenses are generally disqualifying.
No history of drug abuse.
This job (like all submarine jobs) is closed to women

self paced course? what does that mean??

self paced means you do it at your own pace. but they give you a certain amount of time to complete it. you can complete it earlier. if you fall behind you may go to academic review board.

that's all the schooling we do for (ynss) seems short, do we go anywhere else

For YNSS you go to A school in Mississippi and then you go off to Sub school in Groton.
